Huawei has officially unveiled its latest foldable smartphone, the Pura X Max, marking a notable step forward in the company’s ongoing push into large-format foldable devices. Announced on Monday, the new handset introduces a “wide-fold” concept designed to blur the line between a traditional smartphone and a compact tablet, offering users a more immersive display experience without sacrificing portability.
At the core of the Pura X Max is its unconventional folding approach. Rather than relying solely on a tall, narrow foldable screen, Huawei has opted for a broader aspect ratio that expands horizontally when opened. This design choice enables a more expansive viewing area, positioning the device as a hybrid between a mobile phone and a small tablet. When unfolded, the internal display measures 7.7 inches, delivering what Huawei describes as a cinematic viewing experience that fits comfortably in the hand.
Despite its large inner screen, the device remains compact when folded. The outer display measures 5.4 inches, allowing users to handle essential tasks, notifications, and quick interactions without opening the device. This dual-screen approach is intended to enhance usability in both single-hand and full-screen scenarios, depending on the user’s needs.
Huawei has placed significant emphasis on the Pura X Max’s durability and hinge engineering. The device features a newly developed hinge system called “Basalt Waterdrop,” which the company claims increases the usable display area by 16% while improving drop resistance by 33% compared to previous designs. The internal screen is further reinforced with a multi-layer protection structure, including ultra-thin glass (UTG) and additional supporting layers to enhance resilience against daily wear and tear—an ongoing challenge in foldable smartphone engineering.
On the imaging front, the Pura X Max is equipped with a versatile triple-camera system. The setup includes a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto lens designed for advanced optical zoom capabilities, and a 12.5-megapixel ultra-wide camera. Huawei has also incorporated a second-generation color sensor aimed at improving color accuracy and image consistency across different lighting conditions. Among the featured capabilities are Xiaoyi Help, an intelligent support function for everyday tasks, Time Machine, which is designed to help users manage and revisit content more efficiently, AI-powered note-taking tools, and advanced image editing features that streamline photo enhancement and creative adjustments.
Huawei’s broader strategy with the Pura X Max appears to center on deep integration between hardware innovation and artificial intelligence, aiming to create a device that adapts more intuitively to user behavior while maintaining strong performance across productivity, entertainment, and creative use cases.
In terms of aesthetics, the Pura X Max will be available in five color options: Night Black, Pure White, Cosmic Blue, Olive Gold, and Vibrant Orange. The palette reflects a balance between classic tones and more expressive finishes, catering to a wide range of consumer preferences.
