The 17th BRICS Summit Kicks Off Today in Brazil

The 17th BRICS Summit kicks off today, Sunday, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, bringing together leaders of emerging economic powers to discuss pathways for international cooperation and craft a vision that reflects the aspirations of a multipolar world.

Twenty countries are taking part in the summit, including full member states and partner nations within the BRICS framework. The summit runs over two days and features a packed agenda, including plenary sessions and both bilateral and multilateral meetings.

Discussions will primarily focus on enhancing South-South cooperation, reinforcing BRICS' role in global affairs—particularly in global economic governance, technology and innovation, sustainable development, climate issues, and international peace and security. A range of formal sessions will cover these themes.

The summit comes at a critical moment for the group, which faces internal and external challenges testing its unity and ability to achieve its ambitious goals. Member states are working to deepen cooperation in key areas such as technology, climate, and healthcare.

The summit holds significant importance as the Global South seeks to reshape the global order and reduce reliance on traditional Western economic and political structures. The BRICS nations are also pushing to expand trade in local currencies and promote broader economic collaboration among member states as part of a wider strategy to build a multipolar economic system.

Brazil assumed the BRICS presidency for the fourth time in January.
