Manchester City, the reigning English Premier League champions for the past four seasons, continues to strengthen its defensive capabilities.
City has signed their second defender in two days, announcing the acquisition of 19-year-old Brazilian star Vitor Reis from Palmeiras for €35 million ($36 million) on Tuesday.
On Monday, Manchester City revealed the signing of Uzbekistani player Abduqodir Khusanov from French club Lens on a four-and-a-half-year contract. However, the club has not disclosed the duration of Reis' contract.
Reis expressed his excitement about joining Manchester City, saying, "I am thrilled to join Manchester City. I want to make my mark as we strive for more titles."
Manchester City has faced inconsistent results this season, prompting them to make a strong move in the current winter transfer window.
Under the guidance of Spanish coach Pep Guardiola, Manchester City currently sits fifth in the Premier League standings, 12 points behind leaders Liverpool, who still have a game in hand. City is also battling to reach the Champions League Round of 16.
Reports suggest that City is also targeting Egypt's international forward Omar Marmoush, currently with Eintracht Frankfurt, in this transfer window for €75 million ($77 million).
Reis has represented Brazil's U-17 national team and has played 22 matches for Palmeiras' first team.
Manchester City's Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, praised Reis, saying, "He is excellent with the ball and outstanding in aerial duels. He possesses all the qualities needed to become one of the best defenders in the world."
The signings of Reis and Khusanov, who also plays as a central defender, come after injuries to several key players in City's defense, including Ruben Dias, John Stones, and Nathan Aké.
Midfielder Rodri, last year's Ballon d'Or winner, also suffered a severe knee ligament injury, contributing to City's struggles both domestically and internationally.
Historically, Manchester City has preferred to make major signings at the end of the season, but Guardiola has opted to strengthen his squad now.
Manchester City faces a crucial Champions League clash against French hosts Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, with both teams at risk of early elimination from the competition.
