American billionaire Elon Musk is interested in buying the English football club Liverpool, according to his father, as the "Reds" fans eagerly await a potential major acquisition to secure the future of Egyptian star Mohamed Salah, whose contract expires next summer.
The wealth of the CEO of Tesla and X, who is 53 years old, amounts to 425 billion US dollars, making him the richest person in the world.
Musk, who has relatives born and raised in Merseyside, is looking to invest part of his fortune into the Premier League leaders.
His father, Errol, confirmed the surprising news on Tuesday in an interview with Radio Times, saying that the Tesla CEO is very interested in purchasing Liverpool, a club that has won the Champions League six times.
Errol Musk added: "But that doesn’t mean he’s in the process of buying the club; he does want to, though, and anyone would want to. I also do."
He continued: "I won’t say more, so the price doesn’t go up."
After the news spread on social media, Liverpool fans reacted strongly to the possibility of Musk acquiring the club, which is owned by the Fenway Sports Group. The group has not expressed any intention to sell the club, but it opened the door to external investments earlier, when it sold a minority stake to the American investment firm "Dynasty Equity" in September 2023.
The British Daily Star newspaper asked Musk's AI program, known as Grok, what might happen if the billionaire became the owner of Liverpool.
Grok outlined what the club might look like, saying: "Musk is known for his significant investments in technology and infrastructure, and he might focus on upgrading Anfield with cutting-edge technology, potentially making it one of the most advanced football stadiums in the world."
It added: "There’s speculation that Tesla could become the official sponsor, which aligns with his business interests and could also mean integrating innovative technological solutions into the club’s operations, from training facilities to fan experiences."
However, Musk’s top priorities would likely be the future of the trio of Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah, as the AI program explained: "Musk’s track record suggests he might prioritize securing long-term commitments, which could lead to unique contractual negotiations or investments in new talent, perhaps using his global network to scout or attract high-profile players."
The Daily Star predicted that the biggest change would be in how Liverpool fans interact with the club, as Musk could use his platform, X, to boost the club’s digital presence on social media, especially by employing innovative marketing strategies to engage fans globally.
