Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim of Manchester United has admitted that his failures with the English team are the worst in the club’s history following a crushing 1-3 defeat to Brighton on Sunday in the 22nd round of the Premier League.
Manchester United suffered their sixth loss in 11 league matches since Amorim, the former coach of Sporting Lisbon, took over from Dutch coach Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed from his position.
Amorim said: "Imagine what this means for a Manchester United fan. Imagine what this means for me. We have a new coach who loses more than the previous one. I fully understand that."
He added: "Maybe we are the worst team in Manchester United’s history. I know you want headlines, but I say this because we need to acknowledge it and change it. Here are your headlines."
He further said: "I will not change my philosophy no matter what happens. I know we are capable of success, but we need to survive this moment. I’m not naive. We need to survive now."
Amorim’s team is in 13th place in the league, and although they are 10 points ahead of the relegation zone, they are far from certain to avoid a battle for survival due to their disappointing performance.
This is Manchester United’s sixth home loss in the league this season, the highest number in their first 12 matches of the season since 1893-1894. They have also lost 10 of their 22 league matches this season, marking their fastest losing streak in a Premier League season since 1989-1990, when they finished with 16 defeats.
