Biden: Joseph Aoun is the Right Leader for Lebanon

Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden welcomed the election of Joseph Aoun as President of Lebanon on Thursday, calling the Army Commander the "right leader for this period."

In a statement, Biden said, "I trust President Aoun and firmly believe that he is the right leader for this period," considering that Aoun will provide "decisive leadership" in overseeing the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

Before that, U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Amos Hochstein stated, "The election of the president is a great day for Lebanon, a step towards peace, security, and stability."

U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson also said they were "very pleased" with the election of Joseph Aoun as president of the country.

On Thursday, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun took the oath of office before the Lebanese Parliament after being elected as the new president.

The Lebanese Parliament witnessed a heated exchange between MPs Paula Yacoubian and Salim Aoun, which included sharp insults and profanities.

The incident began after Yacoubian's legal intervention, calling for adherence to the constitution, prompting Salim Aoun to respond with what was described as masculine and vulgar language, saying, "You are the degraded one."

Yacoubian sharply retorted, saying, "You are vile and dishonorable, just like your group."

Newly elected Lebanese President Joseph Aoun pledged on Thursday to emphasize the state's right to monopolize arms and called for a national dialogue on a defense strategy.

Reactions from both Arab and international leaders followed the announcement of Joseph Aoun's election as Lebanon's new president on Thursday.

The Lebanese Parliament, in its second session, elected Army Commander Joseph Aoun as president after he secured the absolute majority.

General Joseph Aoun, the army commander, became Lebanon's 14th president following a vacancy in the presidency that lasted for more than two years.
