Norwegian international striker Erling Haaland expressed his immense happiness at extending his contract with Manchester City for a long period, a deal that surprised the entire world.
Haaland's contract was initially set to expire in June 2027, but he is now committed to his future with the club until the 2033/2034 season.
At 24 years old, Haaland made an immediate impact at Manchester City since joining the team in 2022 from Borussia Dortmund, scoring 52 goals in all competitions and contributing to the club's triumph in the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup during his first season.
Haaland scored another 38 goals last season, which saw Manchester City win the Premier League for a fourth consecutive season, an unprecedented achievement.
The long-term extension of Haaland’s contract is a huge boost for Manchester City in a season where they have unexpectedly struggled on the field, currently sitting fifth in the Premier League standings, 12 points behind Liverpool (the leaders), who still have a game in hand.
Haaland said on Tuesday, "Of course, it’s unusual and not normal, but it’s something I love. In the end, it was an easy choice... I feel very happy, and my family is extremely happy, and in the end, this is what I really wanted."
Haaland’s nine-year contract until 2034 is the longest in Premier League history, with expectations that the Norwegian striker will earn £500,000 (around $600,000) per week.
He added, "In the end, I really look forward to staying many years at Manchester, it will be amazing."
He continued, "Above all, as I said, it was the feeling I had, and the people I spoke to convinced me this is the right choice."
Haaland expressed confidence in City’s ability to overcome their difficulties, explaining, "I feel there is really a positive energy within the team, it’s been a difficult period, and everyone knows that. I believe we’ve moved past it now."
