OpenAI Launches "ChatGPT Gov" Application for U.S. Government Agencies

OpenAI announced on Tuesday the launch of its largest new platform, ChatGPT Gov, specifically designed for U.S. government use.

The company described the new platform as a major step forward in security, allowing government agencies to input non-public and sensitive information into OpenAI models while operating within their own secure hosting environments.

Kevin Weil, the company's product director, stated that since early last year, more than 90,000 employees from federal state and local governments have generated over 18 million queries inside ChatGPT.

These queries have utilized AI technology for tasks such as translating and summarizing documents, drafting policy memos, writing code, and building applications. He added that the ChatGPT Gov user interface is similar to that of ChatGPT Enterprise.

He clarified that the key difference is that government agencies will use ChatGPT Gov within their dedicated Microsoft Azure commercial cloud or Azure Government Community Cloud, enabling them to manage their own security, privacy, and compliance requirements.

Weil emphasized that since government agencies rely on AI, rigorous oversight is necessary due to its potential risks, especially concerning public impact and data privacy concerns.

Weil also noted that agencies handling sensitive data, such as defense, law enforcement, and healthcare, are expected to benefit from ChatGPT Gov. Additionally, the platform will be available to all customers in the near future.
