U.S. President Joe Biden turned 82 on Wednesday, an age no sitting president has ever reached while in office.
There were no public events on the president's agenda for Wednesday after his return from a trip to South America late Tuesday night.
Family members, friends, and colleagues, including First Lady Jill Biden and former President Barack Obama, celebrated Biden on social media.
Vice President Kamala Harris wrote on "X": "Happy birthday to my dear friend and our wonderful president, Joe Biden."
Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race in July due to concerns from some voters that he was too old for the job, with questions raised about his mental fitness after a shaky performance in a debate against Republican Donald Trump in June.
Trump, who is 78 years old, defeated Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, 60, in the November 5 election. Trump is set to surpass Biden's age record in his next term, as he will be 82 years and seven months old when the next presidential transition takes place in 2029.
Previously, Ronald Reagan held the record for the oldest president in office, completing his second four-year term at the age of 77.
