Apple Works with Suppliers to Develop a Foldable iPad

Apple is in the process of developing a foldable iPad, with small-scale production expected to commence by the end of 2024. This suggests that Apple may announce the product either in late 2024 or early 2025. This device marks Apple's foray into foldable designs, potentially paving the way for a foldable iPhone in the future.

While companies like Samsung, Huawei, and Lenovo have already released foldable smartphones and computers, Apple has yet to take a similar step. Supply chain sources indicate that Apple has been working on this technology for four years and is continuously refining the design.

The company may begin mass production by the end of 2024 based on current progress, even though the design has not been finalized. The primary focus of the initial foldable device from Apple lies in the display and hinge. Discussions are underway with companies like Samsung and LG to supply Apple with foldable screens.

Apple also expresses concerns about screen creasing, but mechanical technology minimizes creasing for users. The current hinge is designed for performance, but the company is working on improving cost-effectiveness and ease of production.

It is possible that small-scale production will start in early late 2024, with mass production in 2025. The inaugural foldable product from Apple centers around the iPad, with subsequent plans to integrate foldable iPhone designs.

Responsibility for designing new products at Apple has been transferred to the procurement department due to the increasing importance of cost. The aim of this change is to achieve cost-effective production by streamlining designs. This is the driving force behind the continuous changes in foldable product design.

Apple chooses to enter the foldable device market using a tablet instead of a smartphone due to the compatibility of the iPadOS operating system with the foldable device and the smaller market size compared to phones. This makes the potential impact of any device flaws less pronounced on the brand, and the company can effectively manage any damages.
