The European Union Emphasizes the Importance of Continued Humanitarian Support for the Population in the "Karabakh" Region

The European Union has underscored the significance of ensuring unimpeded humanitarian support for the population still in need in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, caught in the crossfire between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as those who have been displaced.

A press release issued by the EU's Directorate-General for External Action, on its official website just hours ago, stated that the region is currently witnessing a mass exodus of Armenians, a consequence of the military operation launched by Azerbaijan on September 19th and 20th of this year, and the months-long closure of the Lachin border corridor. This has compelled people to flee their homes in Nagorno-Karabakh, seeking refuge in Armenia.

The statement further stressed the paramount importance of ensuring unhindered humanitarian support for those still in need in Karabakh, as well as for those who have fled. It affirmed the EU's support for the work of the International Committee of the Red Cross, which is facilitating the urgent evacuation of the wounded and sick, and providing emergency assistance on the ground.

The statement also highlighted the European Commission's announcement of an additional humanitarian aid package of 5 million euros to aid the displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia, as well as those finding themselves in precarious situations within Karabakh. It emphasized that the European Union and its member states stand ready to provide additional humanitarian assistance.

The statement clarified that Azerbaijan bears the responsibility for ensuring the rights and security of Armenians in Karabakh, including their right to live in their homes with dignity, free from intimidation or discrimination. It is imperative that a United Nations-affiliated mission gains access to the area in the coming days. The European Union, for its part, will continue to closely monitor developments on the ground.
