Signal has been banned in China because the government cannot spy on its citizens in it

There is no official explanation for this procedure. The Asian giant strictly controls internet content, thus blocking access to many foreign applications.

Signal, one of the few foreign platforms that has not been blocked in China, has stopped working in this Asian country, so to use it, it is now necessary to use Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Google, Facebook and Twitter, among others, have all suffered the same fate.

The Chinese censorship monitoring platform “Great Fire” indicated on Tuesday (03/16/2021) through its Twitter profile: “Our data shows that Signal was blocked on or before March 15th.” Available in the default store for Apple phones and has a score 4.9 out of 5, which is a review made by over 36,000 users.

China has an extensive system to spy on its citizens and monitor the Internet that allows it to disinfect any content deemed sensitive, such as political criticism or pornography. In the name of stability, Beijing is demanding the digital giants of their own to carry out this task in advance. Signal has not commented on what happened, and there is no official information clarifying the decision.

Signal was launched in 2014, and professionals consider it one of the most secure messaging apps on the market thanks to its encryption system. In China, about 510,000 users have installed it on their phones, according to Sensor Tower. It gained more popularity in January when WhatsApp warned its users that it would share more data with its parent company, Facebook.
